Ten Resolutions for Building a Strong Family
by Todd E. Linaman, Ph.D. from Family Life Communications

Building and maintaining a strong and loving family in today's culture takes a determined will and a conscious and sustained effort on the part of every family member. With so many things competing for our time and attention it is easy to lose sight of the value and significance of the close, loving relationships our families can provide.

It's often been said that when a person comes to the end of their life they realize that the only things that really matter are the loving relationships that were established and cultivated throughout the years - especially those with family.

If you want to build a firm foundation of love and support for your family that will stand the test of time and weather the storms of difficult life circumstances, we encourage you to embrace these ten resolutions for building a strong family.

While trusting God for the love and strength we'll need,
our family resolves to...

I. LIVE OUR LIVES ACCORDING TO WHAT WE VALUE AND BELIEVE ...EVEN WHEN IT ISN'T POPULAR!

But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. Joshua 24:15

II. RESPOND TO EACH OTHER WITH KIND WORDS AND ACTIONS ...EVEN WHEN WE HAVE BEEN HURT OR ARE ANGRY!

Be kind and compassionate to one another... Ephesians 4:32
A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly. Proverbs 14:29

III. LOVE EACH FAMILY MEMBER FOR WHO GOD CREATED THEM TO BE ... EVEN WHEN WE DON'T UNDERSTAND OUR DIFFERENCES!

...love one another deeply, from the heart. 1 Peter 1:22

IV. UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER BEFORE TRYING TO BE UNDERSTOOD ...EVEN WHEN WE BELIEVE WE ARE RIGHT!

Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry... James 1:19

V. MAKE OUR HOME A PLACE WHERE EVERYONE WANTS TO BE ...EVEN WHEN WE KNOW IT STILL WON'T BE PERFECT!

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 1 Peter 4:8-9

VI. SAY "I LOVE YOU" TO EACH OTHER EVERY DAY ...EVEN WHEN WE DON'T ALWAYS FEEL LIKE IT!

An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up. Proverbs 12:25
A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. Proverbs 25:11

VII. ADMIT WHEN WE ARE WRONG AND BE QUICK TO APOLOGIZE ...EVEN WHEN SAYING "I'M SORRY" IS DIFFICULT!

Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. Matthew 5:23-24

VIII. SPEND TIME TOGETHER HAVING FUN ...EVEN WHEN THERE IS WORK TO BE DONE!

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Matthew 6:34

IX. NEVER GIVE UP ON EACH OTHER ...EVEN WHEN THE CIRCUMSTANCES APPEAR HOPELESS!

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:9-10

X. FORGIVE EACH OTHER WHEN WE HAVE BEEN HURT OR OFFENDED ...EVEN WHEN IT IS NOT ASKED FOR!

Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:13

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14

Forsaking All I Trust  Him

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." - Colossians 3:23-24
